Pushover Integration

Last updated on Feb 04, 2026

Pushover is a simple push notification service that delivers real-time alerts to your Android, iPhone, iPad, and Desktop devices. With the FiveNines Pushover integration, you can receive instant notifications when your servers or services experience issues.

Why Use Pushover?

  • Instant mobile alerts - Get notified on your phone within seconds of an incident

  • Works offline - Notifications are delivered even when the app is closed

  • Priority levels - Critical alerts can bypass Do Not Disturb settings

  • Multiple devices - Send alerts to your phone, tablet, and desktop simultaneously

  • One-time purchase - Pushover costs $5 per platform (iOS, Android, Desktop) with no recurring fees

Requirements

  • A Pushover account (free to create)

  • Pushover app installed on your device ($5 one-time purchase per platform)

  • FiveNines Pro plan or higher

Setting Up Pushover

Step 1: Connect Your Device

  1. Navigate to ConfigurationIntegrations in your FiveNines dashboard

  2. Find the Pushover section and click Connect with Pushover

  3. You'll be redirected to Pushover's website to authorize the connection

  4. Log in to your Pushover account (or create one if you don't have one)

  5. Click Subscribe to authorize FiveNines to send you notifications

  6. You'll be redirected back to FiveNines

Step 2: Name Your Device

After authorizing, you'll be asked to give this connection a friendly name. This helps you identify which device or person should receive alerts when configuring your checks.

Examples of good names:

  • "My iPhone"

  • "On-Call Phone"

  • "Ops Team"

  • "John's Android"

Click Save & Connect to complete the setup.

Step 3: Configure Your Checks

Now that Pushover is connected, you can enable it for any monitoring check:

  1. Go to MonitoringChecks

  2. Edit an existing check or create a new one

  3. In the Notifications section, you'll see your Pushover device listed

  4. Check the box next to your Pushover device to enable notifications

  5. Save the check

That's it! You'll now receive Pushover notifications when this check triggers an alert.

Connecting Multiple Devices

You can connect multiple Pushover devices to your FiveNines account. This is useful for:

  • Team notifications - Different team members can receive alerts on their own devices

  • Backup devices - Ensure you receive alerts even if one device is unavailable

  • Escalation - Send to your phone first, then to a backup device

To add another device, simply click Connect with Pushover again and complete the authorization flow with a different Pushover account or device.

Notification Priority Levels

FiveNines automatically sets appropriate priority levels for different alert types:

  • New incident (High): Bypasses quiet hours, plays sound

  • Reminder (Normal): Respects quiet hours

  • Resolved (Low): Silent notification

Using Your Own Pushover Application

By default, FiveNines uses a shared Pushover application to send notifications. This is the easiest option and works great for most users.

However, if you prefer to use your own Pushover application, you can set that up for unlimited notifications (subject to Pushover's own limits).

Why Use Your Own App?

  • No rate limits - Bypass FiveNines' 100/month shared quota

  • Custom branding - Your app name appears in notifications instead of "FiveNines"

  • Full control - Manage your own Pushover application settings

Setting Up Your Own Pushover App

  1. Go to pushover.net/apps and click Create an Application/API Token

  2. Fill in the application details:

    • Name: e.g., "My Server Alerts"

    • Type: Application

    • Description: Optional

    • Icon: Optional (appears in notifications)

  3. Click Create Application and copy the API Token/Key

  4. In FiveNines, go to ConfigurationIntegrations

  5. In the Pushover section, click "Or use your own App Token →"

  6. Fill in:

    • Name: A friendly name for this connection

    • User Key: Your Pushover User Key (found on your Pushover dashboard)

    • App Token: The API Token you just created

  7. Click Connect

Rate Limits

When using FiveNines' shared Pushover application, each organization is limited to 100 Pushover notifications per month on a rolling 30-day window.

This limit applies to all Pushover devices in your organization combined. Most users never come close to this limit, but if you have many checks or frequent incidents, you may want to:

  • Be selective about which checks send Pushover notifications

  • Use email notifications for less critical alerts

  • Consider upgrading to a plan with higher limits

  • Use your own Pushover app (see above) for unlimited notifications

When the limit is reached, Pushover notifications will fail and the error will be logged. Other notification channels (email, Slack, etc.) will continue to work normally.

Note: If you use your own Pushover application, the rate limit does not apply - you're only subject to Pushover's own limits (10,000 messages/month per application).

Disconnecting Pushover

To remove a Pushover device from your account:

  1. Go to ConfigurationIntegrations

  2. Find the Pushover device you want to remove

  3. Click the Delete button (trash icon)

  4. Confirm the deletion

You can also unsubscribe directly from Pushover's website, which will automatically remove the connection from FiveNines.

Troubleshooting

"Pushover subscription is not configured"

This error means the FiveNines Pushover integration hasn't been set up by the administrator. Please contact support if you see this message.

Notifications not arriving

  1. Check your Pushover app - Make sure the Pushover app is installed and you're logged in

  2. Check notification permissions - Ensure Pushover has permission to send notifications on your device

  3. Check Do Not Disturb - High-priority alerts bypass DND, but normal alerts respect it

  4. Verify the check configuration - Make sure Pushover is enabled for the specific check

  5. Check rate limits - If you've exceeded 100 notifications/month using the shared app, Pushover alerts will fail. Consider using your own Pushover app to bypass this limit

"Invalid session" error during setup

This usually means your browser session expired. Simply start the connection process again by clicking Connect with Pushover.

Device showing but not receiving alerts

Make sure the Pushover device is checked/enabled in your monitoring check's notification settings. Simply connecting a device doesn't automatically enable it for all checks.

FAQ

Q: Does FiveNines store my Pushover credentials?

No. FiveNines only stores a subscription key that allows us to send notifications to your specific device. We never have access to your Pushover password or account details.

Q: Can I use my own Pushover application?

Yes! Click "Or use your own App Token →" when setting up Pushover to enter your own API Token and User Key. This gives you unlimited notifications (no 100/month limit) and shows your custom app name in notifications. See the "Using Your Own Pushover Application" section above.

Q: Why is Pushover a paid app?

Pushover is developed by an independent company. The one-time $5 fee (per platform) supports their development and ensures the service remains reliable and ad-free. FiveNines has no affiliation with Pushover.

Q: Can I send test notifications?

Currently, test notifications are sent when you first connect Pushover. To test ongoing notifications, you can temporarily lower a check's threshold to trigger an alert.

Q: What happens if Pushover is down?

If Pushover's service is unavailable, notifications will fail. We recommend using multiple notification channels (e.g., Pushover + Email) for critical alerts to ensure you're always notified.
